The Bathhouse

The Bathhouse begins to explore the implications of wet and dry spaces and how they can occupy the same site effectively. The project touches on ideas of relaxation, sightlines, and public/private spaces, as well as employs a structural system derived from a case study. The roof system utilizes concrete shell architecture and informs the light and experience of the main areas of occupation. The program consists of changing rooms and showers, saunas, three temperature-different pools (hot, cold, and thermo-neutral), as well as an outdoor courtyard and circulatory space.

The structural and organizational system are based on a case study of the Zarzuela Hippodrome in Madrid, Spain, which utilized concrete shells for the roof and cast concrete columns and beams for both structure and organization. This system appeals on an aesthetic level from the exterior, as well as forms the basis of the interior organization given the grid effect of the columns. This same strategy was employed for the organization of the bathhouse.
